Temwa inspires Chinese team to cup glory,wins golden boot

China-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga’s sheer quality shone brightly at the weekend when she inspired her club Wuhan Jiangda to retain the Chinese National Women’s Cup.

The Scorchers’ prolific forward scored a brace as Wuhan beat Jiangsu Suning 3-1.

The 24-year-old spiced it up by retaining the golden boot with six goals.

Temwa: I was surprised

In an interview yesterday, Temwa said she was thrilled with her feat.

She said: “Having missed the semi-final due to a knee injury, honestly I did not expect to rise to the occasion in the final. But God is good and I was surprised with my performance.

“Credit goes to my teammates and our coaches for their belief in me.”

In the semis, Wuhan beat Beijing 2-0.

Temwa said their focus has now switched to the Chinese Women’s Superlesgue which they lead with nine points from three matches.

“Our priority is to defend the league and having won all our three matches so far, it appears we are on track.’

She is currently the second leading scorer in the league with four goals, a goal  behind fellow African and Zambian star Barbara Banda.

Last year, Wuhan won the cup after beating Beijing 3-0 in the final.

Temwa scored a brace and won the Golden Boot Award with six goals.
